  Samhain (October 31st)   HISTORY   Samhain to the Celts was their New Year's Eve.   That mysterious moment belonging to neither past nor present, or this world nor the other.   It was a time when the herds were slaughtered and the meat salted, which also led to the use of salts in magic ritual as a disinfectant against psychic or spiritual evil.   On this night also, the spirits of dead friends sought the warmth of the Samhain fire and communication with the living.   The divinatory aspect of Halloween is understandable for two reasons.   First, the psychic climates of the season favored it, and second, the anxiety about the coming winter demanded it.   The fertility ritual aspect was reflected in legends of gods and heroes.   As such, it was a time of deliberate (and tribally purposeful) sexual freedom.   That is primarily a Celtic tradition, as many other superstitions say to refrain from sex for fear that your forme...

A Gift for Yule-- Stratified Spices

What could be simpler and easier than creating these layered spices? Why, doing something "witchy" of course! Okay, now we step outside the cowan box. Think of mixing your own herbal creations, such as some of the bath mixes I'll post later in the weeks ahead. Wouldn't it be nice to give a person a money bath mix in a container that matches his/her bathroom? How about a Citrus Cleanse bath salt? Now let's really pump up the magick and put in a money symbol painted, etched, or drawn on the jar in green. How about a green bow, or some green crystals on the top? Are you getting ideas now?

Slushy Punch

Lammas Recipe—Slushy Punch Hint: Keep the slush in the freezer at all times in the summer for spur of the moment guests. For each serving, combine equal amounts of slush and carbonated water or lemon-lime carbonated beverage like Sprite or 7-Up. 1 cup sugar 2-3/4 cups water 2 ripe medium bananas, cut up 3 cups unsweetened pineapple juice 1 6 oz can frozen orange juice concentrate 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 1-liter bottle of carbonated water or lemon-lime carbonated beverage Stir sugar and water together until sugar dissolves. Combine the bananas, half the pineapple juice, and orange juice concentrate in the food processor and whirl until combined. Add to sugar mix, and then stir in the lemon juice and the rest of the pineapple juice. Make sure it’s thoroughly blended. Transfer this to a 13x9 baking pan or a similarly shaped freezer container for long-term storage. Freeze for several hours until firm.
